UNC101 - Introduction to Uncertainty Concepts.

The purpose of this training is to serve as a introduction to the concept of uncertainty, and a foundation upon which the remaining uncertainty courses are based. When this course is completed the student should understand:

• the concept of "true value" and "conventional true value"
• the concept of "error" and what might be called "conventional error"
• the difference between absolute and relative uncertainty
• the difference between accuracy and precision
• what are the international standards concerning uncertainty and meaurement
• in general terms what is meant be the word "uncertainty"
• Understand the sigma and pi notation for sums and products
• the following concepts from mathematics (required for uncertainty analysis)
  • Statistic
  • Arithmetic Mean
  • Weighted Mean
  • Variance and Standard Deviation
  • Random Variable
  • Expectation
• the difference between type A and type B uncertainties

This class is required for all subsequent uncertainty courses.

This course covers part of the ASQ CCT body of knowledge and is worth 0.1 Recertification Units (RU) towards ASQ CCT recertification.
