This section of the catalog is concerned with uncertainty analysis. A measurement without an uncertainty estimate of some type is of no value. If one needs a measurement to within a nanometer, and one has a ruler that is only accurate to a millimeter, there would be no point in making the measurement. Conversely of one only needs a measurement to a millimeter, and one purchases an instrument that measures to a nanometer, a lot of money is being wasted. Uncertainty analysis is absolutely essential in metrology, and in measurement in general.
