Instrumentation Catalog

This section of the catalog concerns instrumentation used in measurement. The intent is to have courses on a wide variety of instrumentation in several fields.

Click on the course number to see a detailed description of each course and registration instructions.

Courses marked "(free)" are available to all, whether or not you have a current subscription. All other courses require a current subscription for access. We offer these free courses to allow you to try out our training before you subscribe.

If there is a course you would like to see us develop in this section you can always suggest a course.

Course No.Course TitleEq. Hours*Prerequisites
INST150 Introduction to the Thermal Voltage Converter (Low Frequency)

A short introductory course on AC thermal voltage converters.

 1MEAS201
INST151 RF Thermal Voltage Converters and Micropotentiometers

This is a short course on the RF thermal voltage converter and micropotentiometer, a follow on to the previous course on low-frequency TVC instrumentation.

 1INST150 EE104
INST200 (free) Introduction to the Oscilloscope

Introductory course on the theory and operation of the oscilloscope.

 3EE102 MEAS101
INST201 Introduction to the Spectrum Analyzer

This course covers the basic block diagram and some of the basic controls that can be found on spectrum analyzers. It does not cover basic measurements that can be made with the spectrum analyzer, that is being reserved for follow-on courses. The intent of this course is to provide basic familiarity to this versatile tool.

 4INST200 EE103 MEAS102
INST202 Introduction to the Vector Network Analyzer

An introductory course on the network analyzer. Covers some basic theory, connector care, basic calibration steps, and applications

 4EE104 INST201
INST250 Oscilloscope Probes

This is a short course on oscilloscope probes.

 1INST200
INST301 Introduction to Linear Dimensional Measurement Instrumentation I

This course describes the basics of linear/dimensional measurement instrumentation. It covers the basic instrumentation, how it works, and how to read the instrumentation.

 3MEAS101 MEAS103
INST350 Introduction to the Platinum Resistance Thermometer

An introductory course on the Platinum Resistance Thermometer or PRT. Gives a short introduction to the theory and practical use of a PRT.

 2MEAS140
INST351 Introduction to the Thermocouple

This course introduces a basic instrument used to measure temperature, the thermocouple.

 1MEAS140
INST400 RF and Microwave Devices and Instrumentation

Survey course on RF and microwave devices and instrumentation.

 2EE104
INST401 Passive Waveguide Components

The purpose of this course is to provide basic familiarity with various passive waveguide components that can be part of a waveguide system. It is meant as a survey course that is a prerequisite for other courses on passive waveguide components.

 2INST400
INST402 RF and Microwave Attenuators

A short course in RF and microwave attenuators.

 2INST400
INST403 Circulators, Isolators, and Directional Couplers

In this course we will cover conceptually how circulators, isolators, and directional couplers function. We will also discuss how these devices are used. This course does not get into the level of detail sufficient to be able to design the devices described, that is to be covered in the advanced course. The idea is to give you the general background required to understand conceptually how these devices work, and what they are used for.

 3INST400
INST404 Amplifier Types and Specifications

A short survey course on basic amplifier specifications, and some of the basic types of amplifier.

 4EE103, INST400
INST405 RF and Microwave Power Measurement Devices

A basic introduction to the physics of power measurement, and to basic RF power measurement instrumentation.

 2INST402, INST403
INST406 Introduction to the RF Mixer

This is an introductory course on the RF mixer which describes its basic operating principles, some representative designs, specifications, and some specific applications.

 2EE102 INST400
